Public and Private Schools

Finding the right school is a primary concern for any relocating family. Since Los Angeles County is so large, there are a number of school districts, almost one per community. Please contact the Airman and Family Readiness Center at DSN 633-5248, commercial (310) 653-5248, for specific details on schools and school districts, and for forms for interdistrict transfers.

Private schools are also abundant in Los Angeles. Again, the Airman and Family Readiness Center has several resources on name, location and telephone numbers of private schools in the County. The Schools web page lists the private schools in San Pedro, but there are other surrounding communities that may have more options for you and your child.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when searching for a school.

• Where do you plan to live? and how far will you travel to work? Will you be able to transport your child to a public or private school that is not in your immediate area?
• If your child has special needs, check with the Special Needs Identification Program (SNI)in the Life Skills Support Center in The Clinic. They will furnish resources for health care providers, special education programs, help for physically challenged youth, and counseling resources. Call them at DSN 633-2873, commercial (310) 653-2873.
