History of the Fort
Fort MacArthur, a former US Army post, has an incredible past, and LAAFB is very proud to have many different styles of architecture to offer to military members as Family Housing. The main reservation of Fort MacArthur consists of a total of 403 housing units for officer and enlisted personnel; 22 are listed in the historical registry. Our historic units are of original style dating back to as early as 1918 and are homes for a number of our senior and field grade officers. The Fort also houses 370 units built from 1983-1986. With the exclusion of historic units, the majority of our homes are attached, in a style similar to row houses, consisting of two, three or four bedroom units. There are three other housing areas for Company, Field, and Senior Grade Officers located at Pacific Crest, Pacific Heights I, and Pacific Heights II just a few minutes away from Fort MacArthur. These homes were added to the housing inventory in 1989, consisting of detached three and four bedrooms. Pacific Crest has a total of 91 homes, and the adjacent Pacific Heights I and II has 150, 71 of which are in the California Mediterranean style. One of LAAFB’s most spectacular achievements is the addition of our award winning design for Pacific Heights II, our newest housing annex completed in 2000. The addition of these 71 homes rounds out our inventory to 644.
Housing Privatization (2007)
Today, more than 38 percent of Air Force family housing does not meet modern standards and requires either major improvement or replacement. To meet the DoD goal of upgrading all inadequate housing by 2010, the Air Force has launched into an aggressive revitalization program through a combination of traditional military construction and privatization projects. The goal is to provide access to quality housing at affordable prices where service members and their families choose to live. Los Angeles AFB is among 46 current locations selected by the Air Force for housing privatization. Together with housing at Peterson and Schriever AFBs in Colorado, all of the family housing at LAAFB (Ft MacArthur, Pacific Crest, Pacific Heights I, and Pacific Heights II) is scheduled to be privatized in early 2007. When this occurs, families assigned to LAAFB and eligible for on-base housing will receive Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) whether they choose to live off-base in the local community or on-base in privatized housing. For those selecting on-base housing, the majority of the service member’s BAH will be paid as rent to the project owner (the private firm managing the on-base housing). A smaller portion will be retained by the service member in order to pay for utilities directly to the providers. Additional details, specifically as they related to LAAFB, will be forthcoming as the transition approaches.
