The El Segundo and
San Pedro Chambers of Commerce are creating the STAR
Program as one way to show the valuable relationship between
the LAAFB and their communities. The STAR Program
is retail discount program offered by a variety of businesses to military
personnel and their dependents. It is a great marketing tool for the program's
participants by offering discounts for goods, services, food and entertainment
to military personnel. A wide range of discounts and incentives will be
offered by various hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues, retail stores
and other businesses.
The Los Angeles Air
Force Base and the Space Missile Systems Center play a major role in the
economy of El Segundo, San Pedro and the surrounding cities of the South
Bay. Periodically, Congress mandates a review of each of its military
facilities to determine if it is strategically located. It has been announced
that this process (called BRAC) will begin again soon. This will create
intense competition as other states try to lure the Los Angeles Air Force
Base to their area. One of the determining factors of the BRAC process
is whether or not the LAAFB has the support of the community.
The Chambers will
provide ways to identify your business as a participating member of the
STAR Program. The program and participants will
be publicized through the Chamber's losangelesafb website, ASTRO News
(the Base's newspaper), Base Family Support Services, etc. You can also
use the distinctive "STAR" in your advertising signifying
your business as a program participant. The possibilities are endless!
The Chamber staffs
and the Military Affairs Committee will maintain the database of the STAR
Program. A representative will contact each participant quarterly
to update their information.
Each STAR
Program participant will be required to sign an agreement stating
the details of the discount or incentive offered. The Chamber representative
will be in charge of obtaining signatures. The original agreements will
be stored at the El Segundo and/or San Pedro Peninsula Chamber of Commerce
offices.
